Use small, manageable steps

Take small, simple steps

Instead of making a big change all at once, break it into smaller parts. For example, when starting school, you could:

  • drive by the school first then walk past it
  • look at the school's website
  • try on the uniform
  • practice getting ready in the morning

Introduce new things slowly

Keep offering new experiences, but do so slowly.

For example, if trying new foods or objects, have them around in your environment and slowly help your child get used to them by offering them alongside things they already like.

Let them explore and play with new foods or objects, like smelling or touching them.

Use flexible games

Practice small transitions, like switching between games, to help your child learn to cope with changes and be more adaptable.

Playing different rules in flexible games, such as Dobble, Uno and Chess help build these skills.
