Preparation for change

Visual supports

Using visual supports is very helpful, such as using:

  • visual timetables
  • Social Stories
  • countdowns
  • calendars to show events and any upcoming changes

Support visual prompts with verbal reminders

When talking about changes, give simple and short explanations about:

  • what is happening
  • why it's happening
  • what to expect

Repeat this information as needed, like saying, "Grandma is visiting on Friday," or "Next week, we're going to a new park."

This provides an understanding of what is to come.

Practice and rehearsal

Practice new routines or activities beforehand. For example:

  • pretend to do a new activity
  • practice taking a new route
  • try on new clothes if the uniform is changing

Introducing a Plan B

Have a backup plan ready.

Use positive words to show that changes can be safe and manageable. Say things like, "Today we’re going to the park. If it rains, we’ll go to the aquarium" to help feel prepared.

Switching activities

When changing from one activity to another, create a predictable routine with clear expectations. For example, say, “Five more minutes on the iPad, then we will eat dinner at the table,” so it’s easier to know what comes next.
