Understanding fairness
Many neurodivergent children are highly aware of fairness and may speak up when they see something unjust. They often care deeply about fairness and social justice.
You can help your child understand that fairness doesn’t always mean giving everyone the same thing. Instead, fairness means giving people what they need.
For example, if everyone gets a 20cm step to reach a high shelf, it’s still not fair if shorter people still can’t reach and taller people don’t need the step.
Talking about fairness and difference can help your child:
- understand why reasonable adjustments are important
- learn how to advocate for themselves and others
- see that fairness benefits everyone
