Writing and the development of writing
The skills needed for writing start developing long before children are introduced to writing. The ability to write involves the combination of many skills including the:
- learning aspect including phonics, comprehension and processing of information
- the ability to attend and concentrate in order to practice the skills needed to develop writing - see Maximising attention for taking part in activities advice sheet
- development of physical and sensory skills - see Using my senses advice sheet
Moving to Write is a programme developed by the Cumbria Occupational Therapy service and CCC Early Years Team and helps to consolidate early sensorimotor development and readiness for learning for children in early years and reception settings. Contact your Early Years Advisor for more information.
Learning
If there is a possibility that writing development is delayed due to an element of learning seek the advice of the Specialist Advisory Teachers and/or Educational Psychologist.
