Strategies for young people
Help them feel confident and make their own choices
Involve them in decision-making and problem-solving.
Show them how to ask for help or understand what's expected.
Focus on logic and consequences
Explain reasons for change and what might happen if things stay the same, but do so kindly without making them feel bad.
Develop self-regulation skills
Teach and encourage independent use of calming strategies, time management tools (digital calendars), and self-monitoring.
Prepare for transitions
Talk through major life transitions (for example leaving school, starting college/work) well in advance, visiting new environments, and creating detailed transition plans.
Connect with peers
Encourage friendships with similar peers, so they can share experiences and helpful ideas.
Use their interests
Use what they love most, like their hobbies or favourite topics, as a way to practice being flexible and handling surprises or new rules.
