Causes of impulsive behaviour
Impulsivity can be caused by:
- ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) - one of the most common causes
- mood disorders - such as depression or bipolar disorder
- phobias or anxiety - which can overwhelm a child's ability to think clearly
- lack of sleep - which affects emotional control
- stress or frustration - especially when children can't express how they feel
Young children may act out because they don't have the words to explain what's wrong.
ADHD and impulsivity
ADHD can make it harder for children to manage strong feelings like anger or excitement.
Research shows that some parts of the brain develop more slowly in children with ADHD, especially the areas that help with impulse control and decision-making. ADHD often runs in families, and many children and adults live with it.
With the right support, children with ADHD can learn to manage their impulses and thrive.
