Ride a bike: step by step
Follow this helpful step by step progression when learning to ride to bike.
Helmet skills: Putting on and fastening their helmet.
Practise fastening the buckle before putting the helmet on, use a mirror if needed.
Walking with the bike: Holding the handlebars and walking beside the bike in a straight line.
Encourage your child to walk on the left side of the bike (if right handed) and look where they are going.
Looking ahead: Checking their route is clear and they are aware of their surroundings.
Remind your child to look and listen out for things that may get in the way, including people.
Steering around corners: Pushing the bike around gentle bends and corners.
Start with large turns and encourage smooth steering.
Using the brakes: Stopping the bike safely using both brakes.
Practise brake control before attempting to ride.
Mounting the bike: Getting on the bike independently.
Encourage your child to hold both handlebars and use the brakes if the bike starts to move.
Dismounting the bike: Getting off the bike safely.
Practise stepping off from the left side (if right handed) while keeping hold of the handlebars.
Scooting: Sitting on the saddle and moving forwards using their feet.
Remove the pedals if possible. Encourage sitting rather than standing.
Gliding: Lifting both feet off the ground and balancing briefly.
Encourage your child to look ahead rather than down at the wheel.
Longer glides: Balancing for longer and building confidence.
Practise in a safe, open area and encourage gentle speed.
Safe stopping: Using brakes and putting both feet down when losing balance.
Prompt your child by asking, what do we do if we wobble?
Pedal position: Learning how to position the pedals ready to push off.
Replace pedals if removed earlier. Demonstrate how to lift one pedal into the "ready" position.
Push off: Pushing off with one foot and placing the second foot on the pedal.
Support the bike under the saddle if needed.
Pedalling with support: Pedalling while an adult provides balance support.
Encourage your child to stop if they begin leaning too far.
Stopping while riding: Using brakes and feet to stop safely when needed.
Continue practising safe stopping regularly.
Pedalling with less support: Riding while an adult gradually reduces support.
Continue providing lots of verbal encouragement.
Riding independently: Cycling in a straight line without support.
Encourage your child to look ahead and keep the handlebars straight.
Turning corners: Steering around corners while keeping their balance.
Start with large, gentle turns before moving on to tighter corners.
Steering accuracy: Riding between markers or cones.
Use cones, chalk lines or other visual targets to improve control.
Finishing safely: Stopping, getting off safely and walking the bike.
Encourage your child to park the bike safely and responsibly.
Advanced skills: Avoiding obstacles, sharing space with others and riding on uneven surfaces.
Introduce these skills once your child is confident riding independently.
