Supporting young people with substance use

It is important to talk with young people about drugs and alcohol.

Get informed

Young people often turn to parents or carers for advice. The world they live in is different from when we grew up:

  • they get constant information online, which may not be accurate
  • social norms are changing
  • drugs and alcohol are more visible and accessible
  • stigma around drug use has reduced

Most young people don’t use drugs or alcohol in excess. Talking openly does not encourage use, it helps them make safer choices.

Giving them clear facts and practical advice can help them:

  • make informed decisions
  • stay safe
  • support friends in emergencies

Talking to young people

Tips for talking to young people about drugs and alcohol:

  • learn the facts before starting the conversation
  • stay calm and open, don’t judge or assume
  • choose a good time and place to talk
  • use everyday prompts like news stories or TV shows
  • listen and explain your concerns clearly
  • let them know they can come to you with questions
  • share reliable information and ways to handle peer pressure
  • talk about why young people might use substances (for example stress, curiosity, fitting in)
  • if the conversation goes wrong, take a break and try again
  • if needed, ask someone they trust to talk with them

If your child is using drugs or alcohol:

  • ask how it makes them feel and why they use it
  • talk about other ways to meet those needs
  • set clear boundaries and house rules
