Prevention and intervention

We work with children, young people and their families to address challenges early and provide support before problems become more serious.

Each young person receives an assessment and a personalised support plan based on their individual needs and circumstances.

Who we support

We support children and young people who may be:

  • at risk of offending
  • involved in anti-social behaviour
  • experiencing difficulties at school
  • affected by challenges at home or in their community
  • at risk of becoming involved in the youth justice system

Parents and carers can also access support to help them support their child.

Make a referral

Children, young people, parents and carers can refer themselves to the service.

Early support and intervention

We aim to identify concerns early and provide support before problems escalate.

Support may include:

  • restorative justice opportunities where appropriate
  • support with education, training or employment
  • help with substance use
  • positive activities and skill-building opportunities
  • support for parents and carers
  • access to health and wellbeing services

We work closely with schools, families and partner organisations to make sure young people receive the right support at the right time.

Supporting positive change

We help young people develop the skills, confidence and resilience they need to make positive choices. This may include:

  • one-to-one support
  • group work sessions
  • support with managing emotions
  • developing decision-making skills
  • building healthy relationships
  • managing peer pressure
  • improving confidence and self-esteem

We take a strengths-based approach, helping young people build on what they do well and involving them in decisions about their support.

Working with families

Families play an important role in supporting positive change.

We work with parents and carers to:

  • understand the challenges affecting their child
  • identify appropriate support
  • strengthen family relationships
  • build confidence in supporting their child

Reparation and making amends

Where appropriate, young people may take part in community reparation activities.

Community reparation helps young people understand the impact of their behaviour and make a positive contribution to their community.

We work with local organisations across Cumberland to provide a range of reparation opportunities. Activities are matched, wherever possible, to a young person's interests, skills and development needs.

For examples of available activities, see the Interventions booklet.

Young people can work towards AQA Unit Awards through activities delivered by our Interventions Team.

These awards recognise achievement, encourage personal development and help young people gain confidence while learning new skills.

Awards can cover a range of practical and personal development activities, including:
