Get ready for reception

16 April 2026

Starting reception is a big milestone for children and their families. Whether your child is excited, nervous or a bit of both, there’s lots you can do over the coming months to help them feel confident and ready for school. Cumberland Family Hubs are here to support you every step of the way, with friendly advice, practical ideas and free activities for families.

What does being ‘ready for school’ mean?

Schools do not expect children to be able to read or write before they start reception. Being ready for school is mostly about everyday skills that help children feel comfortable and settled in a new environment, such as:

  • Going to the toilet independently
  • Putting on their coat and shoes
  • Using cutlery and drinking from an open cup
  • Taking turns and sharing
  • Listening to simple instructions and stories
  • Telling adults what they need or how they are feeling

You can practise skills at home as part of your everyday routines.

You could try:

  • Letting your child practise getting dressed, even if it takes a bit longer
  • Encouraging them to use a spoon or fork at mealtimes
  • Reading stories together and talking about the pictures and characters
  • Playing simple turn-taking games
  • Asking them to follow short instructions, like tidying toys away

There are lots more ideas on the Starting Reception website.

Worried about the cost of starting school?

Getting ready for school can feel expensive, but there is support available.

Your child’s school will share what’s really needed, and many schools and communities run preloved uniform sales to help keep costs down.

If your child qualifies for benefits-related free school meals, this can also give access to free holiday activities through the Holiday Activity and Food programme (HAF) so make sure to look out for invites to sign up.

If you want to talk to someone, the Family Community Team can offer free, practical help with things like understanding benefits, planning for work or training, and connecting you with local services and charities. You can email Family.CommunityTeam@cumberland.gov.uk or speak to staff at your local Family Hub.
