Cumberland’s next Member of Youth Parliament

Young people across Cumberland now have the chance to step forward and help shape decision-making at a local, regional and national level, as applications open for the area’s next Members of Youth Parliament (MYPs).

The role offers the chance to influence positive change, develop confidence and leadership skills, and gain valuable experience for future education and employment.

Who can stand for election

To stand for election, you must:

  • be aged 11 to 18
  • live, work or volunteer in Cumberland for at least 14 hours per week
  • submit an Expression of Interest form and parent/carer consent

Application submission deadline: Friday 6 February 2026 at 5pm

The official UKYP election will take place in March 2026.

Application process

Young people wishing to stand for election must complete and submit an Expression of Interest form.

Those who apply, will be invited to a training and information day delivered by Cumberland Youth Voice. This session will explain more about the role, the election process and how to prepare.

After attending the session, applicants will prepare a manifesto explaining why they want to stand for election and what issues they are passionate about.

Once manifestoes are approved, campaigning can begin ahead of the online vote.

Application timeline

  • Friday 6 February – Expression of Interest and consent form deadline
  • Monday 16 February (Workington) and Tuesday 17 February (Carlisle) – training and information days
  • Tuesday 24 February – deadline to submit manifestos
  • Thursday 26 February – manifestoes approved
  • Monday 2 March – campaigning begins
  • Saturday 7 March (8am) – online voting opens
  • Sunday 15 March (11:59pm) – online voting closes
  • Wednesday 18 March – results announced

What elected MYPs will do

Elected MYPs will be expected to represent the views of young people in their constituency and share these with key decision-makers.

As an MYP, you will:

  • gather the views of young people in your area
  • represent these views locally, regionally and nationally
  • take part in meetings, events and campaigns
  • work with their local MP, where possible
  • attend between 6 and 10 regional meetings during your term
  • attend the UKYP Annual Conference (if held)

All MYPs must sign a Code of Conduct and remain non‑party political.

Time commitment

The role lasts for 2 years, with an average commitment of 1 to 5 hours per week spent on UKYP activities.

MYPs will also be expected to attend Cumberland Youth Council sessions, which run fortnightly in the evening.
